Tim McGarigle will be a part of Lovie Smith's first staff at Illinois, a source close to the program said today.
McGarigle left Western Michigan after the 2015 season to join Bill Cubit's staff at Illinois. When Cubit was fired, most of the assistant coaches were let go too.
The former Northwestern linebacker is considered a top young recruiter with strong ties to Illinois.
Hardy Nickerson was announced as defensive coordinator on Monday. Former defensive coordinator Mike Phair is expected to remain a part of the staff. And secondary coach Paul Williams, who joined Cubit's staff, will work for Smith.
