Marathon winner: 'I would not be where I am if I were not training with the U of I group'

BOSTON — It was a surreal experience for Daniel Romanchuk, who was all by himself in the closing miles of Monday’s Boston Marathon.

Every so often, the Parkland College student would look back, and by the end of the race, he was so far in front of second-place Masazumi Soejima that he couldn’t see him.

Romanchuk crossed the line in 1 hour, 21 minutes, 36 seconds to set the American record in the race and become the youngest winner ever.

“I couldn’t quite believe what was happening,” the 20-year-old said. “Boston is just such an iconic race with its history in wheelchair racing.
