URBANA — After resolving numerous controversies during her first nine months in office, interim University of Illinois Chancellor Barbara Wilson just took on a new one.
Nine years after the retirement of Chief Illiniwek, the campus is launching a process to choose a “first-ever” athletic mascot.
Wilson, who had already signaled her support for the idea, announced the decision at the campus Academic Senate meeting Monday, endorsing the recommendation of an Illinois Student Senate ad hoc committee.
She plans to form a committee of 10 to 12 people that will draw up a process and a timeline, starting after the campus’ May 14 commencement.
