Men's recap
CHAMPAIGN — Michael Frintner had no preconceived notions about Friday night’s Presence Covenant Medical Center Illinois 5K.
Frintner has always been a distance runner. He ran four years of cross country and track at Elk Grove High School, and he’s a member of the UI club cross-country team. But Friday’s 5K was the first in Champaign for the 18-year-old freshman.
It was also his first win. Frintner won in 16 minutes, 17 seconds to claim the 5K men’s title — beating Urbana’s Matthew Black by 16 seconds.
“It made my night,” Frintner said just past the 50-yard line on the Memorial Stadium turf.
