Today in Illini history: Ninety years ago today—Oct. 15, 1927—Illinois and Iowa State battled to a tie on the turf of Memorial Stadium, producing the only blemish on what would eventually become a 7-0-1 season for the Illini.
Coach Bob Zuppke's team had shut out its first two opponents, Bradley and Butler, by a combined score of 77-0.
However, in Week 3, Illinois would have to face ISU without five of its players who were quarantined by a scarlet fever epidemic at the University Sigma Pi fraternity house.
When Iowa State tied the score at 12 apiece late in the game, Illini captain Bob Reitsch blocked the Cyclones' extra-point try and saved defeat.
