EASTON, Pa. — She called Pat Summitt “Tennessee.”
Summitt called her “Pennsylvania.”
And neither Theresa Grentz, nor the future legend who would come to define the game, spoke a word about their future women’s basketball coaching careers when they met as college seniors at tryouts for the 1973 World University Games and traveled to Moscow for the tournament. But still, the two found plenty of ways to bond.
“She wasn’t different the first time I met her to what she is now,” said Grentz, who coached Illinois from 1995 to 2007. “When she was on the court, she was all business, she was a fun person to play with, she was competitive.
