SAVOY — Roughly seven years ago, David Keenan was a junior at Salt Fork High School with one goal in mind: earn a scholarship to play collegiate golf.
Fast forward to the end of Saturday’s opening day at the 63rd UI Open, and Keenan holds a commanding 5-stroke lead at an event he’s never won.
Although he’s the same guy who was named the 2009 News-Gazette All-Area Boys’ Golfer of the Year and went on to play golf for Parkland College and Chicago State under full scholarships, Keenan walked off the green at the University of Illinois Orange Course’s 18th hole with a bit of disbelief.
