CHAMPAIGN — As promised, Bill Cubit returned to work bright and early Sunday morning. At 8 or so. But he was up long before that. Closer to 5:30 a.m.
“I couldn’t get to sleep,” Cubit said. “Read your articles.”
Illinois’ full-time coach for the next two seasons, Cubit has work to do. Lots of it. Grass will not be growing under his feet.
His phone buzzed constantly. Texts and calls.
“Probably 300 calls, texts and emails,” Cubit said. “They were 100 percent positive. Players, coaches, other head coaches.”
Cubit first got the word from interim athletic director Paul Kowalczyk on Saturday morning at the team’s Chicago hotel.
