Chief discussion: Amid lingering effects, time to move on

URBANA — Complaining to the NCAA, replacing the "Three-in-One" halftime show and persuading new football coach Lovie Smith to speak out against Chief Illiniwek were offered as suggestions to help the University of Illinois move on from the controversial symbol at a forum Wednesday night at the Illini Union.

About 80 students and faculty members attended the panel discussion about challenging the chief's presence on campus nine years after the symbol was officially retired.

The conversation focused on the racial effects the symbol still has on the learning environment for students and the hope that the campus will be able to move on.
