RANTOUL — Illinois received its sixth oral commitment from a defensive prospect — and 14th overall — for the 2016 class on Sunday.
Linebacker Tim Walton from Detroit Cass Tech committed to the Illini during halftime of Cass Tech’s intrasquad scrimmage.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Walton chose Illinois ahead of offers from Cincinnati, Navy and eight Mid-American Conference schools.
He is the second straight commit from Michigan after offensive lineman Jake Cerny from Traverse City (Mich.) West committed to Illinois on Aug. 9.
Walton, a consensus three-star recruit according to recruiting services, is the first linebacker in the 2016 class for Illinois.
