Banks takes work home

CHAMPAIGN — When designing a defensive game plan, the first step is evaluating the opponent.

“See what our matchups are and where we have advantages,” Illinois co-defensive coordinator Tim Banks said, “and where we think we’re a little deficient.”

For his first three years at Illinois, Banks bounced ideas off Tim Beckman. But his former boss is gone, replaced by Bill Cubit on Friday.

Cubit’s background is on offense. He will happily provide a sounding board for the defensive staff.

“I want to be the guy that’s going over there and being a big support system,” Cubit said.
