Doug Helsom tried to make the trip to Minneapolis this week. He wanted to cheer on his former player Jacqueline Quade at the NCAA Final Four.
Helsom coached Quade at Fort Wayne (Ind.) Carroll. In her final season of 2015, Quade led the Chargers to the Indiana 4A state final at Muncie.
It did not go well.
Undefeated Indianapolis Cathedral swept Carroll 25-21, 25-13 and 25-21.
Afterward, then-senior Quade wasn't happy.
"She did take that loss very hard," Helsom said. "Simply because she had been working pretty much through her whole high school career for that opportunity.
