Asmussen: Buckeyes a tough nut to crack

Matt Wilhelm hopes history doesn’t repeat in Columbus.

Back in 2002, Wilhelm was a starting linebacker for Jim Tressel’s surprise national champions. The first 14-0 school in I-A history, Ohio State was at the top of college football with no end in sight.

Until the next season. Allegations of academic fraud against star running back Maurice Clarett were only the start. Clarett was suspended for the 2003 season for filing a false police report and for receiving improper benefits. He eventually left the school and petitioned to be part of the NFL draft.

A real mess.
