The furor over allegations about player mistreatment in two University of Illinois sports could lead to new protocols for handling student complaints in the athletic program.
As some faculty have already called for, athletic director Mike Thomas is considering an ombudsman position for student-athletes, along with other changes.
Thomas told The News-Gazette the ombudsman would be created in conjunction with the Dean of Students office. Thomas said other steps under consideration include:
— A review of the department's organizational structure to "make sure we have sufficient oversight and support of each sport."
— Strengthening the training for coaches and their staffs on "how to be better resources for and more supportive of the overall wellness of our students.
