The University of Idaho announced Wednesday that it would grant the release of Vandal quarterback Kareem Coles from the football program.
Coles, a freshman from Madison High School in San Diego, was listed as the fourth-string quarterback on the Vandals roster.
Coles had initially committed to Utah State as a high school recruit, despite offers from UNLV and several FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) programs in the Big Sky Conference. He eventually rescinded the commitment and made the decision to attend Idaho after leading Madison High School to a state championship during his senior season.
Because of Coles’ position on the depth chart behind sophomore Matt Linehan and freshman Jake Luton, Idaho head coach Paul Petrino chose to give the recruit an opportunity at wide receiver.
