Hull City avenged their Boxing Day home defeat home to Sunderland with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light on Friday night.
Michael Beale's side had the greater number of efforts and the lion's share of possession but where met with a determined Hull defence, which kept its first clean sheet in eight matches in all competitions.
The visitors' winner came in the 71st minute following the controversial award of a corner kick after a coming together between Sunderland stopper Anthony Patterson and the Tigers' veteran striker Billy Sharp.
Despite replays appearing to indicate the final touch came off the former Sheffield United captain, Liam Rosenior's side were awarded the set-piece and capitalised via Fabio Carvalho's deflected half volley.
