Phelan must stave off Hull relegation after signing permanent contract

Phileas Fogg went around the world quicker, but at long last Hull City have called off their search for a permanent boss. The right man for the job was under their nose from the very start.

Mike Phelan's appointment as Steve Bruce's successor was finally confirmed on Thursday after a caretaker reign that spanned 83 days. Sam Allardyce was England manager for less time, but at least this story comes with a happy ending for the Tigers' newly-appointed head coach.

Phelan has shown the patience of a saint since being asked to take over first-team duties in the wake of Bruce's resignation on July 22.
