It is a first coaching role for the 37-year-old, who also had spells with West Ham, Peterborough, Wigan, Hull, Ipswich and MK Dons, and was called into the England squad three times without playing a game. He has since worked as a broadcaster and also appeared in I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here in 2014.
Leatherhead chairman Richard Brady said in a statement on the club's website: "Jimmy has gained a wealth of experience into a variety of management and coaching techniques as a player and (has) a very clear philosophy in terms of how he wishes his team to play.
