The Houston Texans claimed QB Brandon Weeden off waivers Wednesday afternoon. Weeden was cut by the Cowboys Tuesday, to help make room for Tony Romo. To clear space for Weeden on the roster, the team released cornerback Jumal Rolle.
Weeden was a first round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2012, but lasted just two years with the Browns. He was signed by the Cowboys in 2014 and started when Romo injured his collarbone. He remained the starter for three games before being benched in favor of Matt Cassel.
In just four years, the 32-year old has already reached journeyman status. He's completed 57.7 percent of his passes with 28 TDs and 30 picks. He started 24 games, winning just five. He has not won a game since 2012.
The move reunites Weeden and starting Texans QB Brian Hoyer. The two played together in Cleveland, with Hoyer getting the better of the QB battle more often than now.
Hoyer is questionable for this week with a concussion, leaving T.J. Yates as the team's only other QB on the roster. If Hoyer can't go, expect Yates to get the start. Weeden shouldn't be more than the emergency QB, especially since he needs to learn the offense. The Texans also have QB Zac Dysert on the practice squad.
