Former Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu has agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly.
Mathieu leaves the Texans after his one-year, $7 million contract expired.
The Texans were willing to pay Mathieu nearly $10 million per year, according to sources, on a multi-year contract offer. However, he got $14 million per year annually to join the Chiefs.
Mathieu was voted a team captain by the Texans last season despite joining the team in March. He was forced to play a lot of nickel due to injuries at cornerback.
