MEXICO CITY – U.S. sprinter Tommie Smith, who raised his fist as a sign of black power on the medal stand in the 1968 Olympics here, returned as a guest of the Raiders on Monday.
Smith, making only his second trip back to Mexico City since the Olympics, lit the Al Davis torch in a pre-game ceremony at Estadio Azteca.
The trophy, which honors the former Raiders owner, is traditionally lit at Raiders home games. The team brought it with them on this trip.
Mark Davis, the Raiders owner and Al's son, said this week it was the "right time and right moment" to honor Smith.
