The Texans have released former first-round cornerback Kevin Johnson, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly.
Johnson was due a $9.06 million fifth-year club option in 2019.
The Texans are open to having Johnson back at a different, lower contract figure. By releasing him now prior to the start of free agency, Johnson is able to explore his market value and see if there's a better fit for him contractually and playing situation elsewhere.
Johnson's contract was guaranteed for injury only. It would have become fully guaranteed if he's on the roster on the first day of the 2019 league year.
