HOUSTON -- Like many NFL general managers, Rick Smith has said he strongly believes his Houston Texans should pick the player available with the highest value on their draft board, regardless of position needs.
After trading up to No. 12 to draft Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson on Day 1, Smith said he did just that Friday night, selecting Vanderbilt inside linebacker Zach Cunningham in the second round and Texas running back D'Onta Foreman in the third.
“It’s fortunate when you can get a guy, especially when you have him valued a little bit more than where you took him,” Smith said.
