Texans head coach Lovie Smith was fined $50,000 for unauthorized drills during the team's Organized Team Activities (OTA) practices. Smith was fined for a drill that had offensive linemen going one-on-one against defensive linemen, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano, who was first to report the news.
Teams are allowed 13 offseason practices, including 10 days of OTAs that are conducted without pads. Although these are "no-contact" practices, occasionally linemen get tangled up or receivers and defensive backs go at each other too aggressively. One-on-one linemen drills aren't allowed during the offseason.
The NFL reviews practice footage to make sure teams are following the rules.
