When the Texans picked up veteran kicker Nick Novak as the replacement for a struggling Randy Bullock, he stabilized their kicking game.
It was enough to convince the Texans to sign Novak to a one-year, $971,045 contract that included an $80,000 roster bonus paid in March.
Novak is having a strong training camp as he competes with rookie Ka'imi Fairbairn. Novak connected on three field goals during a 16-9 preseason win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night, making kicks from 49, 46 and 36 yards.
"I think overall the special teams had a productive day," Novak said.
