The Texans have exercised the fifth-year option on defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
Clowney, the first overall pick in 2014, was entering the last year of his contract. Now he's under contract through the 2018 season.
General manager Rick Smith usually extends players with one year left on their contracts, which means Clowney probably would sign an extension before the 2018 season.
Clowney, who moved from outside linebacker to defensive end last season, helped the Texans rank first in defense with the best season of his career. He was voted to his first Pro Bowl and also was voted to the All-Pro Team.
