Texans agree to terms with corner Phillip Gaines

The Texans have reached an agreement with veteran cornerback Phillip Gaines, on a one-year veteran minimum contract, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.

The final contract figures are pending the outcome of the collective bargaining agreement balloting, which would change the amount of the signing bonus.

A former Rice standout and Kansas City Chiefs third-round draft pick, Gaines is recovering from ankle surgery and is expected to be able to participate in offseason activities. Gaines, 28, had 13 tackles in six games and two starts for the Texans last season.

For his career, Gaines has recorded 152 tackles, 18 passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble.
