John McClain of the Houston Chronicle said after this year’s NFL draft that quarterback Tom Savage is expected to be the Houston Texans’ starter for their 2017 season opener despite the fact that they drafted former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
This makes sense given the fact that Watson has an uphill battle when it comes to learning the Texans’ playbook as he transitions to the NFL.
So it’s not a surprise at all when it was reported this week that Savage is taking most of the first-team reps in OTA’s.
From Sarah Barshop of ESPN:
Savage, entering his fourth season in Houston, is getting the majority of the reps with the Texans’ first-team offense and he said that the change is helping him “a lot” to build chemistry with the team’s receiving corps.
