The Texans' attempt to put together a new contract for running back Jonathan Grimes didn't work out and he'll head to free agency Wednesday afternoon.
Grimes will become an unrestricted free agent after he wasn't tendered as a restricted free agent.
The Texans negotiated with Grimes, but ultimately couldn't reach a financial compromise.
The Texans could have retained Grimes on a $1.671 million restricted free agent tender.
Grimes provided value to the Texans' backfield last season as he rushed for a career-high 282 yards and a touchdown and averaged five yards per carry. He also caught 26 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown.
