Houston Texans open up intriguing competition at tight end for next season

Houston Texans are re-signing Darren Fells to a new deal, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Fells, 33, was entering free agency in what was his last chance to earn a respectable NFL deal and will sign a two-year contract worth up to $7 million.

The Texans found lightning in a bottle in Fells’ previous one year deal; his addition was viewed as a low-risk high reward signing as a journeyman joining his third team in six seasons. However, Fells exceeded expectations as a starter in Houston with 34 receptions, 341 receiving yards, and a franchise-record seven touchdowns for a tight end.
