Bill O'Brien Reportedly Wanted to Cut Ryan Mallett, GM Rick Smith Vetoed Move

It has been an odd season for Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett, and the most recent news out of Houston tops it all.

Head coach Bill O'Brien apparently tried to cut Mallett last week prior to the team's 44-26 loss to the Miami Dolphins, but general manager Rick Smith vetoed the decision, according to Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle.

Mallett had fallen out of favor with his head coach because of a pattern of unprofessional behavior. The quarterback, who was named the starter in Week 2 after an ineffective Brian Hoyer was benched, missed a day of training camp in August because he overslept, according to the Chronicle's John McClain.
