New Houston Texans head coach Bill O' Brien likes his starting quarterbacks to have a full grasp of the history of the NFL and the intricacies of the quarterback position. Brian Hoyer, who is currently embroiled in a OTA QB competition with Ryan Mallett for the starting job, may be just what O'Brien is looking for.
"I've really looked at the history of this offense," Hoyer said. "... There was Charlie Weis, Josh [McDaniels], Billy, Josh again and then George [Godsey, the Texans' de facto offensive coordinator]. Everyone kind of puts their own spin on it. There's always going to be a little bit of variation. When you talk about formation, protections, all those things. For me to be able to come back here and go back to what I've stored in my head for the last four years, it couldn't have been a better fit."
Both Mallett and Hoyer are taking their current battle in stride, but Hoyer could have an inside track if he continues to show himself as a studious fit for O'Brien's vision on offense.
