The Houston Texans made to the cusp of the playoff bubble in 2014, but their hopes were dashed in Week 17 after a Baltimore Ravens win secured them an AFC Wild Card spot. Regardless of last year's disappointing ending, the Houston Texans come into NFL Draft season with renewed championship aspirations. However, a couple of bad picks in the draft itself could put a major halt to the franchise's overall momentum. Here's our list of 3 Players Houston Needs To Avoid In The 2015 NFL Draft.
WR Devin Funchess, Michigan
Funchess projects somewhere in the second round on most NFL draft pundits' boards, and we're not sold on Houston either reaching for him in the first or waiting on him later. While he has the size to create mismatches, his lacks the build, hands, and finishing grit that a true top-flight NFL receiver needs to be a star on this level. He might put it all together, but right now there's a lot of sizzle and not so much steak with the former Michigan Wolverine.
QB Bryce Petty, Baylor
Petty has plenty of arm strength and can physically connect on most/all throws, but he struggles to read defenses and adapt on the fly -- a problem that could end up being the difference between Petty as a starter and Petty as a career backup. He's also prone to testing his arm and throwing up 50/50 balls into coverage, making him a risky project pick if he doesn't slip into the later rounds.
OT Cedric Ogbuehi, Texas A&M
Houston can use some help on their offensive line, and should be set up to take a prospect somewhere in the first few rounds or so. Ogbuehi is widely thought of as one of the top 10 offensive tackles in the draft, but concerns linger over key attributes like his core strength and his work in pass protection. The ACL injury he suffered in A&M’s bowl game adds some more doubt to his short-term outlook, positioning Ogbuehi as more of a long-term deal. Houston should look for more certainty if they decide to pick a lineman early in the draft.
