Mavericks hope Dirk Nowitzki can play Friday despite illness

Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki missed Friday's shootaround with an illness, but the Mavericks are hopeful he would be able to play Friday against the Rockets in Dallas' home opener.

"We're hoping he's going to be able to play tonight," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "We think he's going to be OK to play. But that's where he is today. He's got a ... stomach thing."

Nowitzki scored 22 points with eight rebounds, playing 38 minutes, in Dallas' season-opening loss to the Pacers.
