How the biggest trade in Houston Rockets history almost failed to launch

ON JUNE 14, 1995, Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon finally ticked the box on a moment missed a decade ago.

After a midseason trade that brought the former Houston Cougars teammates together to fortify the Houston Rockets' quest to repeat as champions, the iconic duo clasped hands on The Summit arena hardwood in celebration. "Dream" and "The Glide" had won a championship together in Houston, something they missed out on 11 years prior, as "Phi Slama Jama" was edged by the Louisville Cardinals in the 1983 national championship.

Five months prior, ahead of a game between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Utah Jazz, the New York Daily News reported rumors of a possible deal between the Blazers and Seattle SuperSonics that would take Drexler — who at the time starred for Portland — to Seattle for rising star Kendall Gill.
