Historical basketball exhibit opens at Houston Museum of Natural Science

James Naismith’s original 13 rules of basketball are on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science for a limited time starting Friday.

The exhibit – The First Game: The Birth of Basketball – features the original rules, which were published in The Triangle, the Springfield (Mass.) College school newspaper on Jan. 15, 1892.

Naismith called his game “basket ball” and the baskets were wooden peach baskets nailed to the gymnasium wall.

Among the original rules include: “A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, providing those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal.
