Lin said he made the post after reading the cover story of the latest Atlantic magazine - "The Silicon Valley Suicides" - which reports the academic pressures of high school students in that area drive some to a deep depression and even suicide.
Lin, who attended Palo Alto High School on the outskirts of the Silicon Valley, talked about a classmate committing suicide when Lin was a freshman. Then, a year later, a friend committed suicide.
"I realized then that there are so many burdens we don't see the people around us carrying. I told myself that I would try to be more sensitive and open to other people's struggles," Lin wrote in the post.
