In today's trending Rockets news, the Houston Rockets have emerged as one of two main contenders to land potential free agent-to-be Carmelo Anthony - providing he decides to leave almost $30 million in extra money on the table from the New York Knicks.
Here's the scoop from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports:
As re-signing with the Knicks continues to fade as his priority, Chicago and Houston have emerged as the clear frontrunners to acquire Anthony, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Anthony's meeting with Knicks officials on Friday night had little impact on his state of mind, league sources said, because there remain too many uncertainties about how quickly president Phil Jackson can reshape the team into a championship contender.
Chicago and Houston front-office executives are working diligently on contingencies to clear the space to sign Anthony outright – or engage sign-and-trade scenarios with New York, sources said.
Dwight Howard and James Harden are said to be prepared to recruit Anthony when he's on the open market, using the possibility of a new Big Three as a selling point to the seven-time NBA All-Star.
In order to land Anthony, the Rockets will most likely have to clear both Omar Asik and Jeremy Lin off the books - a move which the Rockets are said to be prepared to make if they can assure themselves of a commitment from Anthony.
