The Houston Dynamo named Wade Barrett as interim head coach on Tuesday for the rest of the season.
Barrett, 39, will replace Owen Coyle, who left the team last month and has since taken over Blackburn Rovers in England.
As part of a committee, Barrett has led the team to two straight draws away to Vancouver and Dallas.
"Wade has given a lot to this club through the years, first as a player and now as a coach, and we believe he is the right person to lead the team at this time," Dynamo general manager Matt Jordan said in a statement.
