Commentary: Women’s basketball picking up steam under Hughey

Returning all five starters, seven total letter-winners and a recruiting class with a healthy mix of upperclassmen transfers and talented freshman, the women’s basketball team has already shown improvement from its 6-24 season last year.

Through 18 games, the team is better in almost every statistical category over the last season. Scoring nearly four more points per game, while holding opponents to two fewer points per game, including forcing the three-time defending national champion University of Connecticut Huskies to nearly 20 points below its season average in the Jan 8. game at home.

The Cougars have faced a roller-coaster season, starting out with a tough loss in the last seconds of the season opener to the College of Charleston.
