Thatcher’s departure leaves Sipp as Astros lone lefty reliever

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – With the departure of Joe Thatcher, who was designated for assignment Tuesday, the Astros are down to Tony Sipp as their lone lefthanded reliever.

Manager A.J. Hinch, however, said he didn’t expect many adjustments, if any, in how he handles the bullpen.

“(Sipp) gets righthanders out very effectively, so he’s not just a left-on-left matchup guy,” Hinch said. “The way I’ve used the bullpen on the back end, I’m comfortable with (Will) Harris and (Pat) Neshek and (Luke) Gregerson. The middle innings, we’ll continue to use (Josh) Fields and (Chad) Qualls and Sipp.
