Rookie Vince Velasquez earns praise for poise despite struggles in second start

A.J. Hinch had hoped to let Vince Velasquez go five inning so the rookie righthander could be eligible for the decision Tuesday afternoon, but he pulled him after Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run home run with two outs in the fifth.

Gonzalez’s home run cut the Astros’ lead to 7-5, prompting Hinch to call on righthander Will Harris.

“He’ll be disappointed just in the sense that he didn’t get through five innings and we provided him some runs,” Hinch said after the 8-5 victory. “He got the first two outs pretty quickly and my mind started wondering if he would get into the sixth and actually get a couple outs in the sixth before needing help.
