Matt Duffy’s spot on Astros roster a special moment in Bronx

NEW YORK — Matt Duffy heard voices during batting practice Tuesday evening, a member of the last hitting group as the last man on the Astros’ 25-man roster for the wild card game.

People were calling to him. Someone he played Little League with, friends who moved from New England to New York just showing up in the Bronx. Family came down from Massachusetts too.

How quickly his life has changed.

Duffy, 26, wasn’t even in the big leagues this time a month ago. The righthanded corner infielder was called up in mid-September from Class AAA Fresno, an Astros 20th round pick in 2011 who just kept hitting until he got a chance up top.
