Even good leaders will make bold moves that lead their organization to disaster; however, even with hindsight you can see why they made those choices. At Gettysburg, General Lee probably shouldn’t have attacked the Federal Army when they had the high ground. However, his reasoning was sound. He knew that if he didn’t win a decisive battle in the summer of 63’, the war was probably lost anyway. If he didn’t engage the Union Army, he would probably have to retreat back to Northern Virginia or risk being cutoff and surrounded. Obviously, his gamble didn’t work out but you can respect his reasoning.
