NEW YORK — Growing up midway between Yankee Stadium and Boston’s Fenway Park, George Springer picked sides long ago. And like most loyal Red Sox fans, he doesn’t care for the Yankees.
The Astros’ right fielder grew up in New Britain, Conn., dreaming of one day helping the Red Sox beat the Yankees.
The Astros drafted him out of the University of Connecticut in the first round of the 2011 draft, but the goal hasn’t changed.
For as long as he can remember, he has always wanted to beat the Yankees.
“Always, especially tonight,” Springer said Tuesday before he and the Astros faced the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the winner-take-all American League wild-card game.
