Colby Rasmus returns, accepts team’s $15.8 million qualifying offer

Colby Rasmus will be back with the Astros for one more season.

Rasmus, the outfielder with the hot bat during the playoffs, agreed to accept the Astros’ one-year qualifying offer of $15.8 million, a source familiar with the process told the Chronicle. The deal was first reported by Foxsports.com’s Ken Rosenthal.

The Astros, who declined comment today, previously had said they Rasmus to return. The team made the qualifying offer to insure they would receive compensation (draft pick) if he signed elsewhere as a free agent.

Since the qualifying offer process was added to MLB’s collective bargaining agreement, Rasmus is the first to accept an offer.
