Dana Brown’s first MLB draft as the Astros GM took place a little under a year ago, and while it is undoubtedly too early to draw any conclusions about this class, it is worth examining how the prospects are progressing. Here is a look at the Astro’s first five picks.
Round one, 28 overall: Brice Matthews, SS, University of Nebraska.
Many analysts had Matthews pegged as a mid to late-second-round caliber player, so hearing his name called that early surprised some. Although Matthews has heaps of athleticism and a lot of raw talent, scouts were skeptical about his ability to make consistent contact and play Shortstop at the Major League level.
