After selecting pitchers with their first round picks in 2016 and 2017, the Houston Astros went back to the outfield and selected the left-handed hitter Seth Beer out of Clemson University.
According to MLBPipeline.com, Beer’s best attribute is his power tool (55 grade) with his worst grade by far being his speed (20 grade). The Astros will be adding a player who walked 126 times in his first two years at Clemson and struck out half as many times.
The biggest critics of Beer’s game will point to his lack of defensive ability, complete absence of any speed tool, and also the main criticism that Beer has a poor history in wooden bat leagues compared to the college game, which obviously uses aluminum bats instead.
