Astros’ trainer Nate Lucero won’t return for 2016 season

The Astros will not be bringing back head trainer Nate Lucero next season, people familiar with the decision told the Chronicle on Friday night.

His departure, along with the retirement of longtime assistant trainer Rex Jones, makes it unclear where the Astros envision their training staff next season.

A third trainer, James Ready, was brought on last offseason.

It’s unclear if the decision to let Lucero go stems from an unhappiness with the training staff’s performance.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow declined comment.

A call to Lucero was not immediately returned.

Lucero joined the Astros organization in 1994 and was named head athletic trainer in 2010.
