NEW YORK -- The Astros are planning to place veteran catcher Brian McCann on the 10-day disabled list with right knee soreness and purchase the contract of catcher Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Fresno, general manager Jeff Luhnow said Tuesday.
McCann, 34, is hitting .219 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 114 at-bats this year. After a good start at the plate, he is in a 1-for-26 slump.
The Astros will have to make a 40-man roster move to open a spot for Federowicz, who was hitting .337 with five homers, 18 RBIs and a .407 on-base percentage at Triple-A.
